THE IPAT'YEVSKIY-TROITZKIY MONASTERY was founded in 1330 by the Tartar prince Chet, an ancestor of the Godunovs. Buried in the monastery are its founder and Ivan Susanin, who gave his life for the tzar. It also houses the 'Ipat'yevskiy Monastery' unified Kostroma historical and architectural museum-sanctuary. The monastery's most famous buildings are the Green Tower and Troitzkiy Cathedral, the western part of which holds the Godunovs' burial-vault.
