Russia Travel Guide > Rostov > Borisoglebsky Monastery
Eighteen kolometres from Rostov, in the direction of Uglich lies the BORISOGLEBSKIY MONASTERY. It was founded at the end of the 14th century by two monks from the Troitze-Sergiyevskiy monastery, Fyodor and Pavel, supporters of St. Sergiy Radonezhskiy.
Legend has it that St. Sergiy himself pointed out the place where the monastery should be founded. The monastery greatly strengthened the western border of the Rostov principality. One of the most affluent in the Rostov metropolitan see, it was favoured by Moscow princes and the first Russian tzars. Ivan the Terrible endowed it with his special attention, thrice visiting the monastery, and making more than 20 donations to it.
In 1994, after a 70-year hiatus, the Borisoglebskiy male monastery was revived. It now houses the Borisoglebskiy branch of the 'Rostov Kremlin' museum-sanctuary.
