Russia Travel Guide > Suzdal > Spassky Cathedral
In 1353, Ihe Suzdal'-Nizhegorod prince Boris Konstantinovich founded the SPASSKIY CATHEDRAL in the city's northern quarter. It was later renamed SPASOEVFIMIYEVSKIY in honour ol Ihe monastery's Father Superior. In the 16th century, wooden buildings were replaced by ones made of slone. The oldest such structure is the small church built on top of Evhmiy's grave, which in 1564 became the side-chapel of the Spaso-Preobrazhenskiy cathedral built nearby. In 1642, Russia's national hero, prince Dmitry Pozharskiy, was buried by the cathedrals altar in the familial burial-vault. We saw the monument lo him that stands rear the Cathedral of Si. Basil in Moscow.
On the monastery's cathedral square stands the marquee-topped Uspenskaya Refectory Church (1525) and a belfry (I6th-I7th centuries) where bell-ringing concerts are held. To the East of the cathedral are the 17th century Bol'nichniye (Hospital) Chambers of the Nikol'skaya Church and a two-story monks' residence (I7th-I9th centuries). The monastery's territory is delineated by fortress walls with twelve 17th century towers. Since the 1700s. the monastery has been a prison.
