Russia Travel Guide > Vladimir > The Church of Veil on Nerl
A mile from Bogolyubovo you will see the best surviving creation of Vladimir-Suzdal' architecture of the era of Andrei Bogolyubskiy — the single-domed CHURCH OF THE VEIL ON NERL', built in 1165. The church was built in honour of the holiday of POKROV (The Virgin's Veil).
The cult of the Virgin as the special patron of the Vladimir principality was remarkably strong in Vladimir. The Church of the Veil — elegant, light and balanced — is one of the most lyrical creations ol old Russian architect. Trie reliefs add up to a whole decorative and philosophical system at trie centre of which stands King David, whose image in theology is lied to the idea of the Veil, or Pokrov — the Virgin's patronage. In the spring, the river overflows its banks, Iherefore there is no road leading to it. and you mjst make your way on foot.
