Достопримечательности > Владимир > Dmitrievsky Cathedral
Next to the Uspenskiy Cathedral, on Sobornaya (cathedral) square stands the most unique cre ation of the era of Vsevolod Bol'shoye Gnezdo, tile DMITRIEVSKIY CATHEDRAL, built to hon our the holy warrior Dmitry Solunskiy. Compared to the Uspenskiy, the cathedral — founded in 1194 — is small, but elegant and stately. Its walls are covered in decorative sculptural reliefs, giving them the look of tracery. This is the first instance of such profuse sculptural decoration in Russian architecture. The centre of each facade decoration is King David to whom Andrei Bogolyubskiy is being compared. Congregated around the image of David are depictions of plants, beasts, birds and gryphons. Partially preserved in the cathedral are 12th century frescoes, including the 'Judgment Day' composition. Next to the cathedral is a viewing platform which shows the river Klyaz'ma, the road to the ancient city of Murom, and the forests around Vladimir.
