Достопримечательности > Владимир > Uspensky Women Convent
To the left of the Golden Gates, on Devicheskaya street, stands the active USPENSKIY WOMEN'S CONVENT, founded in 1200 by prince Vsevolod at his wife Mariya's request. Suffering from a grave illness, Mariya made a vow to open a women's convent. When in 1200-01, Uspenskiy Cathedral was opened, she became a nun, taking the name of Marfa. In memory of her, the convent was later called Knyaginin (which means 'the princess's '). Its cathedral has wonderful 17th century frescoes.
